Do Australian Labradoodles get Ear Infections?

If you're a proud owner of an Australian Labradoodle, you already know what delightful and affectionate companions they can be. However, it's important to be aware that Australian Labradoodles are prone to ear infections. Being familiar with the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures can help keep your furry friend healthy and comfortable. In this post, we'll explore the common signs of ear infections in Australian Labradoodles and discuss some effective prevention strategies.

Signs and Symptoms of Dog Ear Infections:

1️ Excessive scratching or pawing at the ears

2️ Head shaking or tilting

3️ Redness or swelling of the ear canal

4️ Unpleasant odor emanating from the ears

5️ Discharge, either brown, yellow, or bloody, from the ear

6️ Accumulation of dark-colored wax or debris in the ear canal

7️ Sensitivity or pain when the ear is touched

8️ Changes in behavior such as irritability or depression

If you notice any of these symptoms in your Australian Labradoodle, it's essential to consult a veterinarian promptly. They can perform a thorough examination and provide the appropriate treatment to alleviate your dog's discomfort. Sometimes, the ear infection is deep in the ear canal and overt symptoms such as obvious redness or swelling of the ear is not apparent.

Preventing Ear Infections in Australian Labradoodles: While Australian Labradoodles are more susceptible to ear infections, there are several proactive steps you can take to minimize the risk:

1️ Regular Ear Cleaning and hair pulling: Gently cleaning your Labradoodle's ears with a veterinarian-recommended ear cleaner can help remove excess wax and debris, reducing the chances of infection. However, be cautious not to insert anything deep into the ear canal to avoid causing damage.

2️ Proper Grooming: Regular grooming is crucial for maintaining healthy ears. Keeping the hair around the ears trimmed can improve airflow and prevent the accumulation of moisture and debris that can contribute to infections. In addition, we do pull our adult dogs ear har here at Sweet Tea. We take a moderate approach, while pulling approximately 80% of the ear hair in and around the ear canal. We also regularly trim the portion of the ear flap which touches our dog's head with electric clippers and a 30 blade attachment to aid in air flow as well.

3️ Drying Ears After Bathing or Swimming: Moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast, so it's essential to dry your Labradoodle's ears thoroughly after they've been exposed to water. Use a clean, dry towel to gently dry the outer ear. Another product which also helps keep the ear dry is ear powder. Using a high-quality ear powder can be a valuable addition to your Australian Labradoodle's ear care routine. Here at Sweet Tea we utilize a product named Terrific Ear Powder, which is specially formulated for dog and can help absorb moisture to help prevent the growth of bacteria and yeast in the ear canal. By applying a small amount of ear powder and gently massaging it into the ear, you can help keep the ears dry and reduce the risk of infections. However, it's crucial to choose a product recommended by your veterinarian and follow the instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective use. Incorporating Terrific Ear Powder into your Labradoodle's grooming regimen can be an excellent proactive step in promoting optimal ear health.

4️ Regular Veterinary Check-ups: Routine visits to the veterinarian allow for early detection of potential ear infections or underlying conditions that could predispose your Labradoodle to such infections. Your vet may recommend preventive measures specific to your dog's needs.

5️ Avoid Irritants: Limit exposure to irritants that can contribute to ear infections, such as excessive dust, pollen, or chemicals that may come in contact with your dog's ears.

Remember, prevention is key when it comes to ear infections. By incorporating these preventive measures into your Australian Labradoodle's care routine, you can help reduce the likelihood of ear infections and ensure your furry friend stays happy and healthy.

While Australian Labradoodles may be predisposed to ear infections, proactive care can make a significant difference in maintaining their ear health. By familiarizing yourself with the signs and symptoms of ear infections, and implementing preventive measures, you can help keep your Labradoodle's ears clean and infection-free. Don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian for guidance and support in providing the best ear care for your beloved Australian Labradoodle.
